Abstract

550,639. Axle-box bearings. M.E. ENGINEERING, Ltd., and JUDELL, O. June 4, 1942, No. 7630. [Class 12 (i)] An axle-box comprises an undivided body 1, Figs 1, 2, with a slot 4 for the passage of the axle 6 and its components, the flanged bush 3 also having a slot 5 which is closed by a segment 7, the bush being rotated after insertion so as to close the slot 4. The bush flanges have a flattened portion engaged by a cover plate 12 to prevent further rotation of the bush. Plate 12 has overhanging side edges 13 acting as dust shields and flanged ends 14 to prevent deformation of the body 1. The body 1 is closed by a strap 15, elastic packing 16 preventing loss of lubricant through slot 5. With through axles, metal washers 20 and packing 21 are used, but with axle ends a thrust plate 19, Fig. 8, is used.
