Abstract

911,085. Axle boxes. TIMKEN ROLLER BEARING CO. Dec. 16, 1960 [Feb. 23, 1960], No. 43332/60. Class 12 (1). In a railway car journal box 10 for the journal 13 of an axle 14, relative vertical and lateral movement between the box and the journal is limited by a stop 40 screwed to the inside of the box, said stop having arcuate faces 43, 44. In a modification, the stop 40 is replaced by a rectangular or trapezoidal block screwed to the inside of the bottom of the box, in a position approximately at 30 degrees to the box vertical centre line. In a further modification, Fig. 5, stop 40 is replaced by an adjustable stop 55 having shims 57. In a still further modification, stop 55 and shim 57 are replaced by an adjustable stud having a nut on the inside and outside of the box. The stops may be applied to existing journal boxes, and the journal may have a tapered bearing assembly 11, or any other type of ball, roller or plain bearing.
