Abstract

755,392. Mounting bodies on railway vehicles. AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES. Oct. 8, 1954, No. 29054/54. Class 103 (6). In a bearing arrangement between the car body and truck bolster of a railway car, comprising a centre bearing secured to the truck bolster and slidably engageable with a centre bearing on the car body, the bearings are elongated to provide engageable bearing surfaces at opposite sides of the transverse vertical centre plane of the bolster and abutments are provided on the centre bearings to limit relative rotational movement. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a truck bolster 2 is formed on the top wall with a centre bearing 12 bounded by arcuate ribs 16 at the ends and converging into 18, 20 at the sides. An upwardly-tapering king-pin 26 is provided at the centre of the bearing, and the bearing sup - ports a centre bearing 44 of a car body bolster. The bearing 44 has a central opening 48 and spaced depressed portions 52, Fig. 5, which have downwardly-facing bearing surfaces 56 spaced a substantial distance from the opening 48, so that the friction between the two bearings 12, 44 is adequate to prevent or reduce horizontal swaying of the car body arising from irregularities in the rails. Relative rotation between the bearing 44 and the track bolster 2 is guided by convex surfaces 57 on the bearing 44 and concave surfaces 25 on the bearing 12, and the rotation is limited by the engagement of parallel edges 59 on the depressed portions of the bearing 44 with converging ribs 18, 20 on the bolster bearing 12. The bearings 12, 44 may be reversed with the bearing 12 provided on the car body and the bearing 44 provided on the truck bolster. In a modification the kinpin is removable and the bearing of the truck bolster is formed as shown in Fig. 8, the converging ribs 18, 20 being interconnected respectively by arcuate ribs 104, 106 with the centre bearing of the car body correspondingly shaped.
