Abstract
550,477. Preparation of high octane gasoline. ANGLO-IRANIAN OIL CO., Ltd., and FAWCETT, E. W. M. Oct. 2,1940, No. 14801. Drawings to Specification. [Class 2 (iii)] Gasoline of high octane number is prepared from normally gaseous hydrocarbons boiling below 50‹C. in a 2-stage process in which a hydrocarbon fraction consisting of one or more normal alkanes is subjected to isomerization at a pressure within the range 1-500 atmospheres and a temperature of 250‹ 600‹C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metallic oxide and/or a sulphide of Group III with the possible addition of metallic oxides or sulphides of Group VIII, the isoalkane produced being subjected with an alkane to alkylation under moderately elevated pressure and at a temperature within the range - 50‹ to + 100‹C. in the presence of an alkylation catalyst. In the preferred form of the process the isoalkane is separated from the isomerization product before being passed to the alkylation stage, the unconverted materials being recirculated to the isomerization stage. The alkylation stage is followed by a similar fractionation, the unreacted isoalkane being re-cycled to the alkylation stage. An example is given of the treatment of a natural gas fraction containing n-butane and isobutane. Specifications 548,901 and 550,480 are referred to.
