Abstract

552,216. Aromatic hydrocarbons. WEIZMANN, C. July 12, 1940, No. 8961. Convention date, Jan. 17. [Class 2 (iii)] Natural mineral hydrocarbon oil is converted into a substantially completely aromatic product by subjecting the oil in the form of its vapour to the action of a metallic hydrogenation or dehydrogenation catalyst at a temperature between 500‹ and 800‹C. at about atmospheric pressure and at a space velocity between about 0.05 and 0.2 litres of the oil per litre of catalyst volume per hour. The reaction may take place in one pass or where necessary this incompletely aromatic product may be recycled. Preferred catalysts mentioned include iron, copper, chromium; nickel, cobalt, their mechanical mixtures and alloys. The liquid products obtained according to the invention comprise mixtures of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, naphthalene. and anthracene. In examples (1) gas oil vapour is passed over an iron-copper catalyst at 700‹C. at a space velocity of 0.2 litres of oil per litre catalyst volume per hour. (2) a gas oil is passed over a copper catalyst at 650‹C. at a space velocity of 0.05. (3) a light fraction of a bituminous oil of b.p. 50‹-180‹C. containing 10 per cent. sulphur is passed in the form of its vapour over an iron catalyst at 600‹- 630‹C. at the same space velocity as in example 2. (4) Gas oil vapour is passed over copper turnings at 550‹C. under a space velocity of 0.2. In all the examples aromatic products were obtained. Specifications 216,150, [Class 32], 315,895, [Class 2(iii)], 388,114, [Gr01lp III], and 412,933 are referred to.
