Abstract
552,115. Aromatic hydrocarbons. WEIZMANN, C. July 12, 1940, No. 8963. Convention date, Jan. 17. [Class 2 (iii)] Aromatic hydrocarbons having eight carbon atoms particularly styrene and ethyl benzene are prepared by passing butylene over a metallic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation catalyst at a temperature between 500‹-600‹C. preferably at atmospheric pressure. In an example butylene is passed through a steel tube containing reduced copper gauze heated to 700‹C. with a space velocity of between 0.1 and 0.05 litres of liquid butylene in the form of its vapour per hour per litre catalyst volume. The products consisted of ethyl benzene, and styrene, with some benzene and naphthalene. Specifications 291,137, [Class 2 (iii)], 343,116, 364,043, 369,351 and 412,933 are referred to.
