Abstract

550,185. Turret lathes. BIGGS, K. L. Jan. 13, 1942, No. 504. [Class 83 (iii)] The slide 4 carrying the turret 3 of a lathe is operated by a yielding lever system. The slide moves on an adjustable saddle 1 having a lug 18, Fig. 4, fitted with the pivot 17 of a link 12 enclosing a rod 11 which can move against spring pressure 16 and is connected through a block 10 to a lever 7 pivoted at 5 to the slide. When the lever is moved in the direction of arrow A, Fig. 1, the turret slide is fed towards the work and the link 12 can yield if undue resistance is encountered. In a modification the operating lever itself is flexible. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the link 12 is of fixed length but the pivot 5 is mounted to yield against a spring 20 housed in the turret slide. Yielding resistance may also be obtained by an air or other fluid dashpot.
