Abstract
550,043. Making shell bodies. WITTER, C A. Jan. 11, 1941, No. 432. Convention date, Jan. 5, 1940. [Class 83 (ii)] A shell body is made by cutting a blank from polygonal or round bar stock, piercing to produce a cup form B, Fig. 3, and skew-rolling to increase the length to that desired. The blank is first shaped in a die 18, Fig. 2, by a punch 8 and then pierced by a punch 12, Fig. 3, the tapered part 12<SP>11</SP> of which may be shorter than that required in the shell. The blank is then rolled on a mandrel having a shape corresponding to the inside 12a of the finished shell between three or more skew rolls 15. The shell may be finished by grinding or machining. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also making the cup blank by casting instead of forging and making articles, other than shells, contoured inside and out. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
