Abstract
646,812. Making pipe fittings ; upsetting; flanging. TUBE TURNS, Inc. Nov. 17, 1947, No. 30498. Convention date, April 9, 1940. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A method of making a pipe-tee &c. from tubular stock having a periphery greater than that of the finished product, includes locating the stock between two relatively movable spaced dies of which one is an outlet forming die and moving the dies towards each other, thereby thickening part of the stock and displacing excess material into the outlet region of the fitting. The blank 20, Figs. 7, 8 is made by forging circular stock in dies 11 and 12. The blank is then subjected to heating or cooling so that the metal in the region of the outlet is at a higher temperature than the rear and side walls, and the dies are moved nearer to each other, Fig. 10. At this stage the aperture 15 may be expanded by an expander 31, Fig. 12. The blank is then reheated to forging temperature and the dies closed, after which sizing means 41 finish the neck, Fig. 22. In a modification the aperture 15 is made after the formation of the blank 20. The finished article 50, Fig. 26, may be machined inside and out to make an article having thinner walls, and the dies 11 and 12 may be designed to provide thickening of the walls adjacent the ends of the article or elsewhere, if desired.
