Abstract

149,176. Lothrop, M. T. Jan. 2, 1920. Bearings; rings. - A conical cup 3 for antifriction bearings is made by forging a ring, preferably by upsetting the end 1 of a bar 2 between dies, and shearing off the projecting metal to form a ring, Fig. 3, with parallel bore 4 and tapered exterior. The pin 5 is then sheared off, or otherwise removed, and the bore 4 reamed, and the cup inserted in a die 6, where a conical mandrel 6a expands the ring so as to form conical interior, and cylindrical exterior surfaces, which are finished by machining, heat treatment, and grinding as required. In some cases, instead of forging from the end of a bar 2, a metal blank is forged into shape. The dies 6, 6a may be formed so as to contract the cup 3 into the desired shape. A stripper 7 may be provided in the die 6.
