Abstract

757,101. Making bolts. HATEBUR, F. 13. Oct. 20, 1953 [Oct. 25, 1952], No. 28867/53. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Forging; extruding.-A workpiece having a polygonal head and a shank, particularly a hexagon head bolt, is made by cold working a blank cut off from round stock, comprising upsetting one end of the blank to form a preliminary polygonal head 3, Fig. 6, having a cross-section smaller than that of the desired finished head, further upsetting the head to form a tapered intermediate stage polygonal head 6, Fig. 7, and finish upsetting the head to final shape 11, Fig. 8. The operations are performed in a progressive heading machine. The initial rod is covered with lubricant, for example a phosphate layer, and is sheared into individual blanks 1, Fig. 5 (not shown), which are transferred to the first forging die 20<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6. The head 3 is upset by a hexagon-shaped punch 191 and simultaneously a tapered end 5 is formed by an adjacent die 20<SP>11</SP> which carries an ejector 22. During its ejection the block is gripped by jaws 17 and conveyed to the second die 25<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7, within which the end portion 9 is formed by extrusion to the thread diameter of the bolt and the head is further upset by a punch 29. The block is ejected from the die by an ejector 27 and from the punch by an ejector 28. Jaws 32 then convey the blank to the third die 331, Fig. 8, where a tapered end 12 is provided by an adjacent die 33<SP>11</SP> and the head is upset to final shape by a punch comprising an outer part 37 carrying a die 38 and an inner part 39 which also acts as an ejector for removing the blank from the die 38. An ejector 36 is provided to remove the blank from the die 33<SP>1</SP> if necessary. The portion 9 is subsequently threaded by a thread rolling operation. The workpiece may be annealed or tempered before or after the thread rolling.
