Abstract

549,828. Coating compositions. YORKSHIRE DYEING & PROOFING CO., Ltd., CROSSLEY, W., and DEAN, J. June 6, 1941, No. 7146. [Class 95] [Also in Group VIII and IV] Textile fabrics of cotton or rayon mixtures thereof are rendered waterproof, gas-proof and translucent by treatment with a mixture comprising a plasticized urea - fomaldehyde type resin, e.g. " Bedafin " (R.T.M.) chlorinated rubber or a chlorinated synthetic rubber-like compound and paraffin wax. Alternatively the fabric may be first treated with the resin and then with the chlorinated rubber and wax. The resin may be applied in incompletely condensed form and further condensed by heating. Cotton fabrics are preferably singed, desized, scoured and/or mercerized before treatment. The fabric may be pre-treated with linseed or coconut oil. The chlorinated rubber may be dissolved in xylene or toluene with ethyl lactate or methyl cyclohexanol and may contain stabilizers and plasticizers, e.g. triethanolamine, calcium resinate, dibutyl phthalate and chlorinated diphenyl. The product may be used as balloon or aeroplane fabrics or as a glass substitute.
