Abstract

To minimise its tendency to permanent soiling, a pile fabric, in which more than 20 per cent of the pile yarns are of vegetable or artificial fibres, is treated upon the outer or exposed portions of the pile with a dilute aqueous colloidal solution of inorganic substances containing a major proportion of silica to form a coating of a weight in solids from about 0.15 oz. to about 0.50 oz. per square yard of pile surface, the fabric then being dried. The pile may be of wool or mohair blended with yarns of cotton, jute, ramie, viscose or acetate rayon, nylon or polyvinylidene chloride, or the pile may comprise entirely yarns of artificial or vegetable fibres. The treating solution may be made from a commercial product, Atta Clay, comprising a complex hydrated aluminium magnesium silicate containing about 67 per cent of silica and may also comprise a small proportion of carbon black or other coloured inorganic substances to avoid lightening the colour of a dyed pile fabric. It may be included in a foaming detergent composition.
