Abstract

Fibrous textile material, paper or asbestos is coloured uniformly or colour-printed with a mixed dispersion made by mixing an aqueous rubber dispersion treated with a cationic soap with a dispersion comprising a water-insoluble pigment or dye dispersed in an aqueous solution of a cationic soap. The presence of the cationic soap gives the particles in each dispersion a positive charge which, under alkaline conditions, causes them to be deposited on the textile fibre. The textile material may be yarn in the form of hank or cheese, carded web, felt, woven or knitted fabric, and may consist of natural or artificial cellulose fibres, wool or silk. The aqueous rubber dispersion, which is of natural rubber, may be a natural or artificial dispersion, preserved, purified, concentrated, vulcanizable, or vulcanized. The cationic soap may be a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium compound, or a ternary sulphonium compound, such as cetyl pyridinium bromide, cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride or bromide, and cetyl dimethyl sulphonium methyl sulphate. Suitable mineral pigments are titanium dioxide, clays, zinc oxide, whiting, ultramarine, chrome green, red iron oxide, cadmium sulphide and carbon black. Organic water-insoluble pigments or dyes include Hansa Yellow, Permanent Red, Helio Red, Monastral Blue and Green, Soluble Yellow DN, Fat Red G, Fat Orange RE, Fat Blue BN, Fat Green B, Brilliant Fat Scarlet R, Oil Yellow, Blue B, Sudan P, Brilliant Fat Brown R. The mixed dispersion may be applied by padding and the exhausted liquor removed by squeezing or hydroextraction, or in the form of a paste, thickened by means of vegetable gum such as locust bean gum, may be printed on to the fabric by screen or embossed roller processes. The material may be simultaneously water-proofed, rot-proofed or moth-proofed by incorporating a further positively charged dispersion of a wax or metal soap, a bactericide, or an insecticide which may be that known as D.D.T. or the lauric ester of pentachlorphenol. When a carbon black dispersion is included, fast drying times may be obtained using infra-red heating. Specifications 497,793, 538,505, [Group III], 595,310, 603,428 and 613,274, [all in Group VIII], are referred to.ALSO:An aqueous rubber dispersion treated with a cationic soap is mixed with a dispersion comprising a wax, metal soap, insecticide, bactericide, water-insoluble pigment or dye dispersed in an aqueous solution of a cationic soap. The presence of the cationic soap gives the particles in each dispersion a positive charge which, under alkaline conditions, causes them to be deposited on fibrous material contacted therewith. The aqueous dispersion, which is of natural rubber, may be a natural or artificial dispersion, preserved purified, concentrated, vulcanizable, or vulcanized. The cationic soap may be a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium compound or a ternary sulphonium compound such as cetyl pyridinium bromide, cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride or bromide, or cetyl dimethyl sulphonium methyl sulphate. The mixed dispersion may be thickened with a vegetable gum such as locust bean gum for printing fabrics. A positively charged carbon black dispersion may be included giving fast drying times when using infra red heating. Specifications 497,793, 538,505, [Group III], 595,310, 603,428, and 613,274, [both in Group VIII], are referred to.
