Abstract
589,151. Waterproofing. LUMSDEN & MACKENZIE, Ltd., and GARRETT, C. Dec. 20, 1944, No. 25579. [Class 140] Fibres, yarns or fabrics of jute or of jute with other fibres, such as cotton, linen or artificial silk are subjected to a solvent dry cleaning or extraction process to remove natural or added oil, fat or wax and are then waterproofed by means of an emulsion of fatty or waxy material in water containing a dispersion agent. A high boiling solvent such as petroleum benzene of boiling point 105‹C. is preferred as extraction agent, but other solvents such as benzol or carbon tetrachloride may be used. The odour of the jute is removed in the extraction process. The waterproofing agent may be a paraffin wax emulsion stabilized by gelatine and after treatment therewith the jute is dried. Before the waterproofing process the jute may be scoured, as with soap or soda ash, bleached as with alkaline hypochlorite or permanganate, and it may be dyed; finally, it may be subjected to a finishing process such as beetling or calendering. Specification 581,083 is referred to.
