Abstract

549,599. Exhaust-silencers. SMITH, B. Sept. 30, 1941, No. 12618. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer comprises a . number of longitudinal, circumferentially - spaced chambers 1 arranged to communicate by ports 6 with the exhaust pipe 2 at opposite sides of a perforated disc 7 or other means for restricting the flow through the pipe. The chambers may be of rectangular, triangular, segmental &c. crosssection, and may be welded to the pipe 2, being either made separately or in one piece, for example of star-shape section. The ends 5 of the chambers are inclined as shown. The disc 7 may be provided with a perforated flange which may be adjusted along the pipe 2 so as to control the effective area of the ports 6 leading from the chambers 1 back to the pipe 2.
