Abstract
549,406. Valves. CROFT, C. M., and HERRIOTT, I. T. Aug. 25, 1941, No. 10822. [Class 135] An automatic cut-off device for controlling the supply of gas or other fluids comprises a valve member normally held away from its seat by a spring detent supported by a fusible plug or the like and adapted to yield when subjected to abnormal heat or shock due to explosions. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the valve member, which co-operates with a seat c at the bottom of the casing b, is in the form of of ball e of rustless steel. The ball is normally held in a side pocket d inclined at an angle of 45 degrees to the pipe line by a ball catch j loaded by a spring k supported by a fusible plug m adjustably screwed into the casing. A detachable cap n is provided to receive the melted plug. A second ball f of somewhat smaller diameter than the valve may be arranged to have a limited movement in the chamber at the back of the valve to increase the effect due to shock. The loose ball valve member may be replaced by a closed cylinder with flat or bulging ends. Modifications are described showing the inlet and outlet connections are arranged on horizontal axes and at right-angles to one another.
