Abstract

549,179. Stud fastenings, bolts, cotters. SPOONER, R. A. W. July 10, 1941, No. 8735. [Classes 44, 89 (i) and 89 (ii)] A device for securing plates together by being passed through registering apertures therein or for use as a cowling or like fastener comprises a tubular body 1 with flange 4 at its outer end and radial apertures 5 near its inner end in which balls 6, or short rods are held captive. The body houses a spindle 2 carrying an operating knob 8 at the outer end and cam-like surfaces with intermediate recesses 7 whereby, according to the angular position of the spindle, the balls are projected as shown to prevent withdrawal from the plate aperture, not shown, or allowed to collapse inwards to effect release. A washer 12 may be provided below flange 4 and the spindle may be held against accidental rotation by a spring metal spider 10 the arms of which have projections engaging in recesses 11 in the face of flange 4, the spider having a square aperture fitting the squared end 9 of the spindle so as to rotate therewith. Alternatively, the spindle may be biased to locking position by a torsion spring, as, for example, in Fig. 8, which shows a spring anchored at 17 to a radial arm 16 on the spindle and at 19 to a tubular part 13 on flange 4. A portion 18 of the spring projects through a slot 14 in part 13 and serves for hand-operation of the spindle, its movement being limited in both directions by the ends of the slot. Fig. 9, shows a fastening of cowling type for securing part 20 to part 21, with an interposed washer 28 of rubber &c. Flange 4 is extended and riveted to part 20 and the spindle has a flush-type head 24 with slot 27 for operation by screw driver or like tool. Head 24 and part 20 may have markings to indicate whether the fastening is in secured or released position. The spindle is biased inwards by a spring 25 causing projections 26 to engage in recesses to prevent accidental rotation of the spindle.
