Abstract

554,307. Riveting; stud fastenings. AVIATION DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd., and SPOONER, R. A. W. Dec. 20, 1941, No. 16461. [Class 44] In a stud fastening for securing perforated members together, applicable generally but particularly adapted for holding plates during riveting, and of the kind described in Specification 524,297, in which a ball or balls 7 or other member is normally held projected from the tubular body 1 by a movable rod 8 within the body and is allowed to collapse inwards to release the device when rod 8 is axially displaced from normal position against spring action, the device is arranged so that inward collapse occurs when the rod is moved in either direction from a normal mid-position. The device can thus be inserted by pressure on rod 8, or removed by a pull on a ring 13 carried by the rod. As shown, a coiled compression spring 14 surrounds tube 1 near the head 3 and its ends extend inwards through slots 4, 5 in the tube into recesses 11, 12 in the rod. The rod is thus held in, and returned to the normal position displacement from which allows ball 7 to move inwards into one or other of two recesses 9, 10.
