With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter 'fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pencil constructed in accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the pencil shown in Figure 1 with the short pencil projected from the barrel to operative position.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the pencil with the short pencil retracted within the barrel.

Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in thevarious views, I designates a cylindrical cap adapted to receive a short pencil I|,fthe cap being provided with a frustumshaped upper end I2 and also being provided with an outer annular shoulder I3 at the bottom of the frustum shaped upper end.

A barrel I4 forms a grip and is provided near its lower end with an inner annular shoulder I5 against which the shoulder of the cap I3 abuts when the short pencil II is projected to operative position beyond the barrel. 'Ihe barrel is formed at its lower end with a sleeve I6 which slidably receives the cap I 0 and forms a guide to direct sliding movement of the short pencil II into and out of the barrel.

An angular latch I1 is pivoted intermediate its ends, as shown at I8, on the exterior of'the barrel. One end of the latch is bent inwardly to form a finger I9 which is engaged through an opening in the barrel. A helical spring 2| is confined between the free end of the latch and the barrel to normally hold the finger extended into the barrel. When the short pencil is slid into the barrel, the finger I9 passes over the outer annular shoulder I3 of the cap and lodges un- 55 shoulder and a Ipencil guide, a cylindrical cap jected position beyond the barrel.

The stud provides means by which the pencil II may be conveniently drawn into the barrel.

l0 A helical spring 24 has its lower end sleeved on the frustum shaped upper end I2 of the cap and seated on the shoulder I3 of the cap. The upper end of the spring is engaged against a shoulder 25 formed on a sleeve 26, which is 15 threadedly engaged with the upper end of the barrel and which receives a cylindrical eraser 21. When the short pencil II is withdrawn into the barrel by the operator moving the stud 22, the helical spring 24 will be compressed, see Figure 3.

20 When the operator releases the latch I1 by pressure upon its free end, the finger I9 will be withdrawn from underneath the annular shoulder- I3 of the cap and permit the spring 24 to expand and move the short pencil II to pro- The spring then exerts sufficient pressure upon the shoulder I3 of the cap to releasably hold the shoulder against the shoulder I5 of the barrel and prevent relative movement of the pencil and barrel while the pencil is in use.

From the above description it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood Without further explanation.

What is claimed is:

1. A pencil, comprising an elongated barrel having a reduced lower end forming an internal shoulder, a cylindrical cap having an op'en lower end adapted to receive a pencil, an annular ange 40 carried by the upper end of the cap, a frustum shaped extension carried by the cap above the flange, a coil spring carried within the barrel and surrounding the frustum shaped extension and engaging the ange at one end and the upper end of the barrel at the opposite end, a pivoted inwardly spring pressed latch on the barrel with a laterally turned finger passing through the barrel and adapted to pass under the shoulder when the pencil is forced into the barrel, and means carried by the cap and extending out through the barrel-for moving the pencil upwardly against the tension of the spring.

2. A pencil, comprising an elongated barrel having a reduced lower endv forming an internal nnger passing through an opening in the barrel and adapted to engage the shoulder when the pencil is forced into thebarrel and hold the same against the tension of the spring, and a pin carried by the cap and extending through a slot in the barrel, whereby the pencil may be moved inwardly against the tension of the spring.
