656,977. Quick - release fastenings. QUILTER, J. R. C. Jan. 21, 1948, No. 1715. [Class 44] A quick release fastening for connecting together the straps of a parachute or safety harness comprises a slotted casing, spring controlled bolts capable of engaging terminal lugs on the straps when entered into the slots and a cam operated releasing plate for the bolts, controlled by external means through a spring coupling device which allows rotation through a limited angle in either direction before operating the cam mechanism. The fastening, shown in elevation in Fig. 1 and section in Fig. 3 comprises a casing 10 of which the base 17 is formed with outwardly directed slots 11, spring-pressed bolts 13, 14 intersecting the slots and nesting in shallow depressions 25 in the faces thereof. Each bolt carries a flange 22, an extension 26 of which slidingly engages in a slot 27 in the rim 28 of the casing to ensure that the bevelled face 24 is correctly directed. The releasing plate 21 engaging under the flanges 22 carries a sleeve 29 encircling the operating spindle 33 which is formed with a cam-head 32 co-operating with a cam profile at the end of the sleeve 29. The thrust of the spindle 33 is taken on a ball 35 seated in a thrust member 36. A pair of notches formed in the cam profile of the sleeve 29 receives the cam-head 32 to retain the spindle in the releasing position. The flange 22 of one bolt 14 may be omitted so that this bolt is not displaced by the releasing plate. A flat cam member 38, Fig. 2, fits on the squared end 40 of the spindle 33 and is engaged by a pair of springs 41 secured in an oval-shaped opening 42 in the boss of the operating handle 37. This mechanism permits rotation of the handle through a small angle, e.g. 20 degrees, without turning the spindle. The springs then contact the sides of the opening 42 and the cam 38 rotates with the handle. This prevents accidental release of the fastening. Specification 524,504 is referred.to.
