Abstract

549,160. Coating paper webs. CHAMPION PAPER & FIBRE CO. July 16, 1941, No. 8978, Convention date, July 31, 1940. [Classes 96 and 140] In making castsurface' coated paper, a travelling web 13 is supplied with an excess 21 of coating mixture so that there is an accumulation where the web 13 is pressed against the travelling casting - surface against which the coated surface of the web remains until it has set sufficiently to release itself therefrom. The pool 21 of excess mixture washes air and foreign matter from the nip thus ensuring uniformity of surface. As illustrated coating mixture is applied at 40 and excess collected at 25, the thickness of the coating being controlled by the pressure of springs 14 adjusted at 17, a roll 12a being washed by a water-pool 31. In modifications coating mixture may be applied directly to the " casting-surface " 11 or to the nip where the paper contacts the surface 11, and the roll 12a dispensed with, the pressure roll 32 being used directly to apply the web 13 to the surface 11.
