[Class 140] A spreading machine of the kind in which the fabric is held up to the gauge only by its tension comprises a spreading gauge c, a plate h angularly adjustable by screws i forming a trough into which coating composition, e.g. rubber, synthetic rubber or cellulose derivative is fed, a pair of rollers b, d over which the fabric a passes, one in front of and the other behind the gauge so that the fabric is depressed by the gauge, side controls e spaced from the edges of the fabric to limit the flow of composition over the edges. of the fabric and selvedge scraper blades f at the rear of the gauge extending under the edges of the fabric to remove excess coating therefrom. The spreading gauge c has two operative edges which may be brought into service by handle g. The weight of coating applied may be varied by adjustment of the angles of approach or delivery of the fabric to' or from the gauge, e.g. by adjusting the height of rollers b, d. Webs, e.g. a straight fabric and a biassed fabric, from two coating machines may be united at the nip of combining rollers, or an uncoated fabric may be combined with a coated fabric.
