Abstract

727,602. Coating webs. WALDRON CORPORATION, J. Sept. 5, 1952 [Sept. 7, 1951], No. 22407/52. Class 140. A web W, e.g. of paper, is coated with liquid coating composition, e.g. by a roller 14, and the surplus coating is removed by an air jet from a nozzle 24 which has a slot defined by a pair of converging plates 50 and 52, one of which carries a baffle plate 26 which forms a second slot adjacent the main slot through which a secondary current of air is induced by the flow of high-velocity air through the main slot. The width of both slots is adjustable, and the inner surface of each plate 50 and 52 is convex with the curvature increasing towards the lip. A plate 32 deflects the air stream after it has acted on the web, and a drip pan 34 catches coating material removed by the air blast. The nozzle is pivoted at each end so that it can rock about an axis roughly coinciding with the line of impact of the main air jet, and also about the axis of tubular manifold 44. Adjustable stops limit the amount of rocking movement. Specification 647,886 is referred to.
