In lithographic damping apparatus in which liquid is blown from a partly submerged liquid carrier 2 by compressed air, a shield or screen 4, 6 parallel to the axis of the cylinder P to be moistened is arranged between the air nozzle 1 and the surface of the cylinder, and relative movement between the nozzle and the shield or screen is controlled so as periodically to interrupt the liquid stream directed against the cylinder. As shown in Fig. 1 the screen 4 is rotatable about the orificed spraying tube 1 with, or separately from, the liquid carrier 2, and is timed to obstruct the air blast only when the channel 5 of the cylinder P (where the ends of the printing plate are secured) comes into the spraying zone; two or more such revoluble screens 4 may be provided, and their movements may be intermittent. In Fig. 3 the screen 6 is fixed and the tube 1 is rocked at the appropriate moment by a cam 7, spring-loaded lever 8 and link 10, to divert the spray onto the screen. In another form the tube 1 is fixed and the screen is connected to a cam and lever system for vertical movement into the path of the spray. Specification 714,409 is referred to.
