Abstract

518,166. Continuous sheet-spraying machines. MACLAURIN, J. D. May 18, 1938, No. 14828. [Class 15 (i)] A coating-machine for sheet material such as paper comprises means for moving a web of the material past a number of spray nozzles spaced transversely of the web and rotatable about a transverse axis. The machine includes means for passing the web past a number of such sprayers and for drying' it 'at intermediate points ; the sprayers may also be reciprocated. The coating medium is prepared by suspending a finely divided solid in a liquid and blowing in air to form an emulsion which is sprayed by means of air which may be moistened with butenol, carbon tetrachloride, or formaldehyde. As shown in Fig. 1, the machine comprises two main parts A, B each of which coats one face of the web and comprises a number of colour rollers C, which may apply different coatings. The web 12 passes from a roll 22 over perforated or wire mesh belts 19 supported on vertically adjustable rollers 18, and perforated rubber endless blankets 161 supported on vertically adjustable rollers 160, suction boxes 20, 162 being provided. Jets of heated air from perforated cylinders 25 dry the web between the applications of coating material. The colour cylinders C are vertically adjustable by screw and nut mechanism and carry a number of nozzles ; the are rotated and may also be reciprocated. Each colour cylinder comprises a colour duct 99, Fig. 7, and an outer air tube 98 fed from opposite ends, one end being fixed to a rotary shaft; the ducts 98, 99 are in communication through small openings at the end of the cylinder.
