Abstract

726,158. Printing-machines. ST. MARIE, G. J. Sept. 15, 1953, No. 25459/53. Class 100(2). Inking and damping - apparatus.-Drying means to remove moisture fed back into an inking system of a lithographic, offset &c. printing press from the dampened non-image areas of the printing surface, comprises a shield 16 mounted adjacent an inking roller 11<SP>1</SP> and supporting two parallel hollow members 13, 14 whose faces 19, 20 nearest the roller are perforated at 22, 26 along their entire length for passage of air from the member 13, supplied with compressed air, and into the member 14, connected to a vacuum source; valve means 23, 24 are provided to close selectively the perforations 22. In Fig. 1 a downward air stream will flow tangentially against the upwardly-moving surface of the metal roller 11<SP>1</SP>; the shield 16 is of hollow box form. Similar drying means may be associated with the forme inking rollers 4 and with the metal rollers 11 of the lithographic press shown, in which the messenger roller 7 of the damping apparatus contacts two formedamping rollers 3 simultaneously.
