Abstract

549,109. Knitting. NEEDHAM, W. April 4, 1941, No. 4496. [Class 74 (ii)] A knitting-machine needle is provided with a cutting edge for severing the knitting yarn. The cutting edge may be formed at the front of the usual wide lower part 12 of the stem, or at the inclined portion where this lower part meets the narrower upper part 12 of the stem. Alternatively the cutting edge may be provided as at 14a or 14b in a cleft 14 in the stem. In another form a recess containing the cutting edge is adapted to be closed by a latch. The needles may be used in a circular machine for knitting a stocking blank by rotary knitting by varying the number of inoperative needles in a gap and cutting the float threads at each end of the gap. The needles serving to cut the yarn may be the two that at the time are functioning as selvedge needles or may be the needles adjacent thereto. The appropriate needles are selected and raised to engage a long raising cam which raises the needles so that the cutting edges are brought into operative position. The needles may be plural latch needles. Specifications 329,098, 330,041, [both in Class 74 (ii)], 500,230 and 537,965, are referred to.
