Abstract

548,763. Fuel-injection pumps. SOC. ANON. A. SAURER. April 28, 1941, No. 5474. Convention date, May 7, 1940. [Class 102 (i)] In a fuel-injection pump for internal combustion engines in which all the pump elements are housed in an undivided casing 1, the cylinder 10 is put in and pressed down from the end remote from the cam shaft 2, and in which the piston 9 is pressed by a return spring 11 against a plunger 6 which operates in a partition between the cam shaft and the spring chamber which is provided with a lateral aperture 27, the connection between the piston and the spring is releasable from the lateral opening without rotating the piston, whereby the piston and cylinder are removable from the end remote from the cam shaft, whilst the other parts are removable through the lateral aperture. The latter is closed by a readily releasable cover 28. The lower end of the spring 11 bears directly against a plate 29 carried by a plate 31 which has a radial slot, whilst the plate 29 and the upper spring plate 34 are both flanged at 39, 40 to engage between the flanges 37, 38 of an assembling and releasing sleeve 36 when the piston is in its uppermost position, and the spring compressed to its minimum length. The pressure valve assembly 22 being previously removed, a bolt is screwed into a threaded hole 35 in the upper end of the piston and the latter pressed downwards to free the slotted plate 31 so that it can be removed laterally. By pulling upwards on the draw-off bolt, the driving connection 16 on the piston rod 32 engages the cylinder 10 and the two are withdrawn upwardly. In one modification the slotted spring plate is arranged within an annular unslotted plate and rests on the collar 33 of the piston rod so that it is pushed out by a shoulder on the piston rod when the unslotted plate is raised by the releasing sleeve 36. In a second modification, a one-piece slotted lower spring plate has two segments cut away from its rim to enable the spring to be grasped and the plate drawn out laterally. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a third modification in which one or more driving projections on the piston rod engage in corresponding grooves cut in the regulating sleeve 12 and the bore in the casing 1. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
