Abstract

548,596. Moulding glass. GOWLLAND, G. P. July 11, 1941, No. 8792. [Class 56] Relates to apparatus for moulding heated lumps of glass, particularly for moulding blanks for lenses and mirrors. According to the invention, a glass blank is centred on a die 1 by a pair of arms 4 with curved end 5 which are arranged to swing just above the surface of the die. The arms are normally urged towards one another but are moved apart positively when the plunger 2 descends to press the glass. The arms 5 are pivoted to the machine frame and are drawn together by a spring 16. Rollers 7 on the arms embrace the edges of a cam plate 8 adjustably secured to the ram 3 of the plunger. The edges 9 of the cam converge downwardly and are continued by diverging portions 10. In use, with the plunger 2 in its highest position the edges 10 move the arms 4 apart to allow a piece of hot glass to be introduced on to the die 1. As the plunger descends, the arms come together and the ends 5 centre the glass on the die. Continued downward movement of the plunger causes the edges 9 to move the arms apart out of the way of the plunger. The cam 8 may be suitably shaped to allow the arms to locate the glass in any desired position on the die 1.
