548,151. Cutting machines. CHAMPLAIN CORPORATION. April 19, 1941, No. 5087. Convention date, April 23, 1940. [Class 31 (i)] A web of flexible material such as paper board is severed into strips by apparatus comprising a cutting cylinder 124 and a coacting impression cylinder 128 both cylinders having contacting bearer portions 170, 172 holding them in such relative position that the cutter bars 148 secured to the cylinder 124 approach the impression surface 156 on the impression cylinder 128 sufficiently close to sever the tensioned web but do not contact with the impression surface being spaced therefrom by 0.0005 to 0.001 inch. The cutter bars may be of straight or curved sided wedge section of 60 degrees-80 degrees and the cutting edge may be rounded to a radius of 0.025 inch. The cutting cylinder is driven by a sprocket 180 and chain 184 and the two cylinders are rotated in unison by gears 186, 198. The shafts 126, 130 of the two cylinders are out .of vertical alignment and the cutting pressure is obtained by a lateral movement of the bearing blocks of the impression cylinder effected by means of a hand lever 302 operating on shaft 300, arm 288, rod 276 and toggle devices 314, 316 acting on brackets 270 secured to the bearing housings of the impression cylinder.
