Abstract

547,984. Friction clutches. TAYLOR, L. June 21, 1941, No. 7850. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to single or double friction clutches in which friction discs splined to the driving and driven members are brought into action by a pressure sleeve 4 operated by circumferentially spaced toggle links 14 actuated by a striking sleeve 17 and in which a locking plate a positioned between the friction discs and the pressure sleeve 4 is splined to a clutch sleeve 13 and has a circumferential series of holes a<SP>1</SP> for engagement with a spring urged pin 3 carried by the pressure sleeve 4. According to the invention the plate a is connected to a smaller diameter ring a<SP>2</SP> by webs or bars a', the ring a<SP>2</SP> being subjected to pressure by springs b located in pockets b<SP>1</SP> in the sleeve 13. The plate a is of steel and has projections a<SP>4</SP> engaging axial grooves in the sleeve 13. Preferably the ring a<SP>2</SP> and bars a<SP>3</SP> are of non-ferrous metal, e.g. brass. and are secured to the plate a by casting. The clutch may include resilient buffers 15 as described in Specification 530,919. The pressure sleeve 4 has axial pins slidably engaging an adjusting sleeve 12 and it also has a notch for a tommy bar which is used to withdraw the pin a from a hole a<SP>1</SP> when adjustment is required.
