Abstract

547,579. Heat treating. BUDD INDUCTION HEATING, Inc. May 1, 1941, No. 5669. Convention date, May 17, 1940. [Class 72] [Also in Groups XI and XXXV] A tubular member 14 is rotatably mounted in a frame 10 and carries a heating coil 20 with an annular core of radial wedge-shaped laminations 24 held between collars 28, 30. The upper end of the member 14 carries the secondary 34 of the power transformer with an annular core 35 of similar radial laminations. The secondary 34 is connected to the coil 20 by leads 36, 38, 42, 44, member 14; and internal conductor 40. A power-factor correction is obtained by means of a second transformer having a primary 50 with radial laminations 48 mounted on the member 14 and connected to it and to the conductor 40 by leads 52, 54. The secondary 60 is non-rotatable, and; together with the core 58 of radial laminations, is adjustable axially by gearing 67 to vary the coupling between the coils to a condenser 69. The primary 70 of the power transformer is non-rotatable and is movable axially by air pressure acting on a piston 78 to switch off the current. When thus uncoupled from the secondary, the primary may be coupled with an annular laminated iron extension 80 carried by the secondary core. Rotation of the member 14 and its associated parts is effected by gearing 82, 84. The support for the workpiece 90 comprises an axially movable member 86 with clutch 88 to receive the work. When the workpiece is heated to the required temperature, it may be lowered and quenched by a fixed sprayer 96. Cooling water may circulate in the coils, and in the space 41. In a modification for heat-treating and quenching long tubular objects, the heat-treating head 120, Fig. 2, may be provided with a quenching device 122 having an annular orifice 124, rotatably mounted on a supply pipe 126. The quenching device is rotated by raising it so that tongues 130 engage recesses 132 in the head 120. Progressive movement of the work is effected by gearing 92, 94. Specification 520,479 is referred to.
