Abstract
615,150. Induction-heating apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and NELSON, H. M. July 29, 1946, Nos. 22541 and 37131. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] The power input to a workpiece being heat treated is kept substantially constant by effecting relative movement between the workpiece and induction, coil, or between two concentrically arranged electromagnetically coupled conductors, the inner conductor surrounding the workpiece. In one embodiment, the workpiece 14, Fig. 1, is supported on a platform 13 and surrounded by the induction coil 15 which is supplied from a D.C. source 2 and oscillation generator 1. Wattmeter 6, arranged in the D.C. supply circuit, has its moving element 7 co-operating with contact 8 or 9 depending on the power passing therethrough, the contacts being arranged in circuit with a reversible electric motor 10. The motor is connected through gearing to platform 13 and thereby moves the workpiece towards or away from the coil 15. Alternatively the conductor 19 having an inducing portion 16 surrounding the workpiece and in fixed relation therewith may have relative motion with respect to the coil 20 as described. Further, the coil 20 may move, or may be in series-connected halves which move towards or away from each other. In a further embodiment when a number of similar workpieces are to be treated, the heating time to reach the Curie point is determined and the conductor 19 moved automatically, after this time, into greater inductive relationship with the coil 20.
