Abstract
547,156. Locomotives. BULLEID, O. V. Feb. 6, 1941, No. 1596. [Class 79 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a steam locomotive, the link motion of the slide-valve gearing is driven from cranks or eccentrics on a secondary shaft mounted on the frame and geared with a driving axle b, e.g. by chain and sprocket gearing e, m connecting the shaft and axle respectively with a countershaft k about on a level with the axle, or by worm or bevel gearing. The radius links n are rocked by rods o connected with the cranks or eccentrics and pivotally connected to brackets n<SP>1</SP> extending from the links n. Combination levers p are connected by links x with the big ends of the rods o, and also with rods q connected with the valve rods z; and radius rods r are connected with the upper ends of rods p, the other ends of the rods r being actuated by a reversing servomotor t. This may comprise a steam cylinder opposed by a check action cylinder, and a shaft 10 capable of being locked in any position by a clutch releasable by a further steam cylinder. The shaft may drive an oil pump. The valves may be those described in Specification 547,180, [Group XXVI].
