Abstract

546,057. Chemical closets. AUSTRAL SANITARY PRODUCTS, Ltd., and SMITH, L. V. A. Jan. 13, 1941, No. 483. [Class 26] In a chemical closet of the kind in which there is provided in the solvent liquid a receiving trough which is operable to be at least partially submerged in the liquid when not required for use but which is raisable into a position in which it is substantially clear of the liquid ready for use, a hinged plate is provided at the open back of the trough normally closing the opening except for a restricted area serving as a valve, and remains closed as the force of liquid bears against it during immersion of the trough so conducing a rapid, shallow surge of liquid forwardly along the base of the trough, the plate being free to open as the liquid and sewage flow out when the liquid level settles down after it has been reimmersed after use. The open back of the trough 9 of a chemical closet as described in Specification 481,385 is provided with a flap 25 suspended by rings from a bridge piece 24 and somewhat wider than the opening. The front of the trough 9 is closed by a shield 27 bowed to cor. respond to the shape of the front of the tank 5 and extending above and below the trough; and provided with a packing strip 28 to prevent the passage of liquid in the tank upwardly between the top of the shield and the front of the tank. When used over and earth pit, the tank 5 has a drain outlet 30 closed by a plug 31 the handle 32 of which extends above the liquid level for access through a cover plate 33. If an earth pit is not available, the drain outlet 30 is not provided and the tank is emptied through the opening covered by the plate 33. The whole of the mechanism including the trough 9, the seat 7, lid 8, and the mechanism for raising and lowering the trough may be removably secured e.g. by butterfly nuts, to a top plate of the tank so that the whole of the interior mechanism may be removed from the latter. Specification 445,329 also is referred to.
