Abstract
545,872. Beryllium alginate. SPEAKMAN, J. B., CHAMBERLAIN, N. H., and CEFOIL, Ltd. Nov. 14, 1940, No. 16503. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Groups IV and VIII] In the production of alkali-resistant alginate fibres, filaments, yarns or films, the alginate is converted partly or completely into beryllium alginate. In an example, a solution of basic beryllium acetate is obtained by suspending beryllium carbonate in water, mixing the suspen. sion with glacial acetic acid, warming on a steam bath till the carbonate is dissolved and most of the carbon dioxide expelled, cooling and diluting with a large quantity'of water. Yarns of calcium alginate are steeped in a dilute solution of the basic beryllium acetate at room temperature for two days. The yarns and liquor are then heated on a boiling water-bath for an hour and the yarns are then removed, washed, and dried. The yarns may originally be composed of calcium, aluminium or other alginate, or of alginic acid. They may be treated so that they consist of a mixed aluminium, chromium, and beryllium alginate by steeping in a solution containing aluminium triacetate, chromium acetate partly in the form of a basic salt, and basic beryllium acetate. In another example, a solution of sodium alginate is extruded into a solution of beryllium sulphate in water acidified with hydrochloric acid. Beryllium alginate fibres are obtained directly.
