Abstract

549,642. Artificial silk etc.; proofing artificial threads. COURTAULDS, Ltd., WORMELL, R. L., and KNIGHT, C. L. May 27, 1941, No. 6778. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] The resistance to attack by boiling water or hot dilute acid of artificial threads having a basis of casein, vegetable seed protein or other protein is improved by .treating the threads with a solution containing formaldehyde and an alkali metal bisulphate or an alkali metal sulphate and sufficient sulphuric acid to convert at least a large proportion of the sulphate into bisulphate. This treatment may be effected during or after one or more hardening treatments e.g. with aqueous solutions of formaldehyde or metallic salts such as aluminium. Bleaching agents such as sodium hydrosulphite may be added to the bisulphate-formaldehyde bath. During the treatment the threads may be placed in a heavy cage or wire frame or other sinking device in order to keep them immersed in the liquid which is of high specific gravity. In an example, freshly spun casein threads are hardened in a solution of aluminium sulphate, formaldehyde, and sodium carbonate. They are washed and then immersed in a solution prepared by dissolving sodium sulphate, sulphuric acid, formaldehyde, and aluminium sulphate in water. The threads are soaked in very dilute sulphuric acid and then placed in a solution of chromium sulphate and formaldehyde. They are subsequently washed with sodium carbonate solution and with water and then given a soft finish by treating with a solution containing Turkey Red oil and sodium bicarbonate. In another example, artificial filaments from a solution of soya bean protein are hardened with a solution of aluminium sulphate, common salt, sodium sulphate, and formaldehyde. They are washed and treated with a solution of sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, aluminium sulphate, and formaldehyde, first at room temperature for several hours and then at a higher temperature. In another example, hardened casein fibres are treated with a solution of sodium sulphate and sodium carbonate, and then with a solution of sodium bisulphate and formaldehyde.
