Abstract

Artificial protein fibres are made by spinning into a coagulating bath an aqueous composition comprising a major proportion of a protein material, preferably casein, and a minor proportion of a soluble salt of carboxymethyl cellulose, preferably the sodium salt. Desirably, the spinning solution contains casein and sodium carboxymethylcellulose in proportions by weight within the range 90 : 10 to 65 : 35, especially 85 : 15, the casein and sodium carboxymethylcellulose constituting about 18% by weight of the spinning solution, which may also contain sufficient sodium hydroxide to give a solution pH of 10-10,5, and a small proportion of diethyleneglycol monolaurate. Conventional casein coagulating baths are used, (e.g. sulphuric acidsodium sulphate). Spinning may be effected at extrusion speeds of 40-100 m./min. with a draft of up to 300-400% effected in two stages, (e.g. by passage through two drawing baths each containing aluminium sulphate and sodium chloride, with a little sulphuric acid, the first at 40 DEG C. and the second at 65 DEG -70 DEG C.) The drawn filaments, cut if desired, may then be insolubilized in conventional casein insolubilizing baths, e.g. formaldehyde-sodium chloride-aluminium sulphate, desirably in two or more stages, and washed and dried. Drying is preferably effected below 100 DEG C. Filaments so made have a wet tenacity of the order of 0,65 gms./denier and are resistant to boiling water.
