[Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] A skein of yarn is produced by winding the yarn into a series of doubled loops to form a folded skein having the loops arranged so that the initial ones lie on the inside of the fold which forms one end of the skein, the ends of the loops forming the-other end thereof; the yarn end leading to the inner loops is exposed at the looped ends for withdrawal without entanglement. As shown the skein is formed on a spindle 1, Fig. 6, by passing the yarn across the forked end 6 and around one of a pair of pegs 7, 8 projecting from the spindle in a plane at right angles to that of the forked end, then up over the end 6 down and around the other of the pegs and so on; the skein may be retained in position by bands 16 which may be threaded thereon before it is removed from the spindle. Spindles 1, on which a number of yarns T may be simultaneously wound, may be rotatably carried in'a bolster rail 2, Fig. 1, with cranked ends mounted in a rail 3 fixed eccentrically on driven gears 41. The yarn T from a supply passes through a thread guide 18 to the spindle 1, the guides being carried by a rack 9 slidably mounted on guides 19 and actuated by a crank 13 from a shaft 14 so that each thread guide performs an elliptical path about the spindle twice for each rotation thereof and lays the thread in the forked end 6 and about the pins 7, 8 which may be rotatably mounted in the spindle and inclined downwards during the winding of the skein. The spindle may be arranged vertically or slightly inclined to the vertical and the thread guides may be arranged to move in a circular path.
