Abstract
545,305. Generators. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., CLARKE, L. J., and WALKER, J. H. March 7, 1941, No. 3146. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXXIII] De-icing heaters attached to the airscrew or other rotatable part of an aircraft are supplied with alternating current by an inductortype alternator having the rotor and stator carried by the rotatable part and an adjacent fixed part respectively. The inherently high resistance of the alternator limits output at excessive speeds, and thus reduces the risk of burning out the heaters. The homopolar alternator shown in Fig. 1 comprises a rotor 6 and stator 15 attached to the hub 2 and housing 1 respectively. The rotor consists of a magnetic shell 7 and notched laminated cores 8, 9 provided with a single winding 10, or a pair, connected by leads 14 to the heaters. The stator comprises a channel-ring 17 containing a winding 20, and supporting staggered toothed rings 18, 19 which provide poles of different polarity. The winding 20 is connected by leads 21 to a source of direct current. The winding 10 may be so arranged that axially adjacent portions of the cores 8, 9 are of opposite polarity, in which case the parts 17, 18, 19 of the stator can be formed integrally. The parts 8, 18 may be omitted. The stator may be arranged externally to the rotor, and the field element may be carried by the rotor. The winding 20 may be replaced by permanent magnets. In this case, one of the rings 18, 19 may be rotatable, or the rings may be axially adjustable, to regulate the output. The heteropolar alternator shown in Fig. 5 comprises a rotor 9 having poles surrounded by coils, and a stator 15 having a winding 20, and poles 23 which vary in polarity from quadrant to quadrant. In modifications, the windings in alternate quadrants of the rotor are reversed, and the poles 23 are spaced uniformly; or both the rotor and stator may have uniformly but differently spaced poles. Specifications 525,452 and 545,298, [Group XXXIII], are referred to.
