Abstract

577,038. Dynamos. TUSTIN, A., MANDL, A., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 31, 1941, No. 9767. [Class 35] A polyphase homopolar alternator comprises three pairs 18, 22 ; 2, 13 ; 17, 21 of cooperating stator and rotor elements. The outer rotor elements 21, 22 have single polar projections 23, 24 diametrically opposite to a single polar projection 14 on the centre rotor element. Exciting coils 15, 16 produce a magnetic flux flowing in one radial direction between pole 14 and wound stator element 2 and in the other radial direction between poles 23, 24 and unwound stator elements 17, 18. To obtain magnetic and dynamic balance poles 23, 24 are made with the same pitch and radial depth, but half the axial width, of the central pole. Four coils 5 are wound in four equidistant slots on the stator 2 and as the pole 14 passes each in turn it induces four complete cyclic pulses with flat tops. These pulses are spaced 90‹ apart and by a suitable rectifying circuit may be made undirectional. The rotor elements are spaced on the shaft 6 by sleeves 25. Cylindrical members 26 position the stator 2 within the main frame 1, which has dished ends 19, 20 within which are secured the stator members 17, 18 and the bearings for the rotor. If desired, the rotor may be fixed while the " stator " rotates.
