[Class 83 (iii)] A lathe having a train of gearing 5 ... 8 between the spindle 11 and the lead screw 4 has a stop-operated clutch interposed between the spindle and the first wheel 8 of the train. The saddle 14 operated by the lead screw carries a cross slide 15 fitted with a tool post 18 or a capstan post operated by a spindle 16 from a hand wheel 17. A spindle 19 on the saddle carries a stop head 20 fitted with stop rods 22 ... 24 selectively positioned to stop the saddle after a predetermined travel by coacting with one arm 26 of a bell crank lever 26, 27, which through a cam 30 and members 32, 33 imparts axial movement to a rod 34. Normally a spring 36 causes a conical member 38 on the rod to engage a ball 39 in a recess in the wheel 8 to lock the wheel 8 to the spindle but when the rod 34 is actuated by the stop mechanism the ball moves to the position shown in Fig. 4 to stop the drive to the lead screw.
