Abstract
544,118. Permanent magnets. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 18, 1940, No. 17813. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1939. [Class 35] A lifting and holding magnel consists of two similar permanent magnets of U-form of iron, nickel and aluminium alloy prepared in accordance with Specification 423,897, [Group II], which may be provided with pole-pieces 12, 13 of high-permeability, high saturation alloy, for example an alloy of cobalt iron soldered to the magnet by the process described in Specification 496,103, [Group XXII]. The two magnets are according to the invention superimposed on one another in a non-central position as shown so that there are three " air gaps 15, 16, 17 and a concentration of flux through the gap 16 where unlike poles are in contact with one another. For the best results the area of contact at 16 should be equal to the sum of the areas at 15 and 17.
