449,926. Demagnetizing permanent magnets. HUMPHREYS, H., HUMPHREYS, W., HUMPHREYS, A., and HUMPHREYS, A., (trading as HUMPHREYS & SONS, J. H.), Blackriding Electrical Works, Werneth, Oldham. March 20, 1935, No. 8664. [Class 35] In an apparatus comprising a coil excited with alternating-current for demagnetizing steel tools &c., laminated plates of high perrneability are mounted upon one or more limbs of the coil at right angles to the winding so as substantially to enclose certain portions thereof. Fig. 1 shows a coil 14 wound between the flanges 15 of a rectangular former and upon the two long limbs are mounted a series of laminations 16 of Swedish iron or high permeability steel or alloy in block formation secured by non- magnetic bolts. Each plate is recessed to fit over the coil as shown in Fig. 3, and the object to be demagnetized is placed in or passed through the space 18. In a modification, Fig. 6, the coil holder is enclosed on three sides by laminated plates and on the fourth side are adjustable polepieces 20. The article to be demagnetized is placed across the polepieces or in the gap 21. A rectangular coil having a series of laminations in block formation on all four limbs and a circular coil are described.
