544,058. Air-raid shelters. CHROBOK, P. Oct. 9, 1940, No. 15085. [Class 20 (i)] An air-raid shelter is provided with an outer concrete roof mounted on springs and adapted for movement between concrete or like wall extensions above a sub-roof ; the springs may be metal volute or laminated plate springs, or hydraulic or pneumatic or other non-metallic spring devices. In one form, as shown in Fig. 1, the shelter 7 is provided with an inner roof 6, between upwardly extending portions 10 of which is positioned an outer gable-shaped roof 4 of lattice construction, mounted on volute springs 5 placed between the inner and outer roofs, the outer roof being guided after impact by the wall extensions. The outer roof is cased with metal plates which act to deflect a bomb or shrapnel, and the space between the roofs may be filled with packing material. In another form as shown in Fig. 3, the inner and outer roofs 21 and 11 respectively are mounted on carriage springs 22 and 14 respectively positioned on the upper ends of the walls 17 of the chamber 18, while extensions 19 of the walls act as guides to the outer roof portion after impact. The upper edges of the wall extensions are capped at 20 to act as stops for the outer roof and to aid in deflecting bombs. The shelter may be wholly or partially sunk into the ground.
