Abstract

504,642. Air-raid shelters; metal plates. BLUNT, P. M. Nov. 12, 1937, No. 31063. [Classes 20 (i) and 20 (ii)] An air-raid shelter of closed form is made by bolting together a number of peripherally ranged steel plates a of such outline that, when assembled together, they form a structure of domed or paraboloid shape on a flat base. The shelter shown comprises eight plates of roughly triangular outline, one plate being formed with a flanged rectangular opening communicating with an entrance tunnel d. The inner and outer ends of the tunnel are provided with closely fitting doors j to form an air lock. Strips of packing are fitted between the meeting flanges of the plates a to provide gas-tight joints. The width and length of the structure may be extended by the interposition of uniform flanged plates of rectangular outline. The shelter may be mounted on a concrete base and may be covered with a layer of concrete and a top layer of earth. In a modification, a shelter similar in shape to the eight-sided structure shown, is composed of four suitably curved flanged plates.
