Abstract

542,786. Cranes. ORTHOSTYLE, Ltd., and CODD, R. Sept. 14, 1940, No. 14200. [Class 78 (iv)] The jib is pivoted on a portable crane at a point intermediate its length and is raised to, or lowered from, its operative position by the hoisting rope which passes round a pulley at the lower end of the jib, the hook being then anchored to the jib. The jib 10, 22 is pivoted at a point 18 to braced standards 17 on a carriage 11. When in the raised position shown in full lines, a stay 32 becomes taut and the lower end of the jib bears against an abutment plate on the carriage and is locked thereto by a cotter pin. The hoisting rope or chain 19 is led from the upper of two pulleys 20, 21 over a pulley 23 at the angle of the jib, and thence over a pulley 24 on the lower extension of the jib to a winch 25. When the hook 33 is anchored to a p int on the jib, and the cotter pin adjacent the abutment plate is removed, the jib may be lowered gradually by the winch into the position shown in dotted lines. The rope then engages pulley 31 on the carriage 11 to ensure effective leverage on the jib.
