Abstract

541,721. Valves. PEDDER, F. S., and LONGENECKER, C. I. June 6, 1940, No. 9884. [Class 135] A fluid-actuated valve of the kind comprising a flexible valve member secured to a support and extending across a port to control the same has a resilient member mounted at the point of securement arranged to distribute the flexing strains induced in the valve member as it moves relatively to said port, whereby breakage of the valve members may be reduced. The Figure shows the invention applied to a valve biased towards its open position and adapted to control a port connecting the intake pipe with the priming fluid chamber of a recirculating selfpriming centrifugal pump. The elongated resilient valve member 35 of sheet bronze is held against a rubber pad 38 supported by the inclined face 36 of a base member by bolts 37. When moved by the fluid flow towards its closed position the valve member first contacts with the lower edge of the valve seat 33, as shown in the Figure, to give a throttled flow and afterwards snaps to the fully closed position. When used with valves biased to the closed position the pad 38 is placed on the other side of the valve member. Specifications 394,871, 425,085, [both in Group XXVI], and 496,795 are referred to.
