Abstract

541,221. Flexible couplings. PRESTWICK & CO., Ltd., J. A., and MARCHANT, W. D. July 12, 1940, No. 11621. [Class 80 (ii)] The driving and driven coupling members 1, 2 are in the form of double-arm levers or discs connected together by flat links wholly or in part of rubber and pivoted to the arms. The links are preferably so dimensioned that the centrifugal force exerted thereon at the normal speed of rotation is balanced by the tension in the links but where substantial malalignment of the shafts is likely to occur, the centrifugal force may exceed the tension effect so as to cause the links to bow outwards. The links are preferably bushed to receive pivot pins. The double-arm levers may be replaced by spiders naving three, four or more arms. Where heavy loads have to be transmitted without undue increase in the size of individual links, these may be arranged side-by-side as at 3, 3a, Fig. 5. The links may be of laminated construction.
